and、but、or、so：把兩個一樣重要的句子接起來

and 是「而且、然後」，but 是「但是」，or 是「或者、否則」，so 是「所以」。兩個完整的句子用它們接起來時，連接詞前面通常加逗號。

• I did my homework, and then I played games.我寫完功課，然後玩遊戲。

• The bag is nice, but it's too expensive.這個包包很好看，但是太貴了。

• Hurry up, or you'll miss the bus.快一點，不然你會錯過公車。

• It was raining, so we stayed home.那時在下雨，所以我們待在家。

because 和 so 只能選一個

中文習慣說「因為……所以……」，兩個詞一起用。英文不行：because（因為）和 so（所以）一句只能用一個。because 放在原因前面，so 放在結果前面。because 開頭的子句放句首時，後面要加逗號。

• I was late because I missed the bus.我遲到了，因為我錯過公車。

• Because it was hot, we bought bubble tea.因為天氣很熱，我們買了珍珠奶茶。

• It was hot, so we bought bubble tea.天氣很熱，所以我們買了珍珠奶茶。

when、before、after、while：說時間

when 是「當……的時候」，before 是「在……之前」，after 是「在……之後」，while 是「在……的期間」，常接進行式，表示某件事正在進行時。這些子句放句首時，後面加逗號；放句尾時不用。

• When I got home, my dog ran to me.我回到家的時候，我的狗跑向我。

• Wash your hands before you eat.吃東西前要洗手。

• After we finished dinner, we watched TV.我們吃完晚餐後看了電視。

• While I was taking a shower, the phone rang.我在洗澡的時候，電話響了。

if、when 子句：用現在式說未來

if 是「如果」。說未來的事時，if 和 when（表時間）的那半句要用現在式，另外那半句才用 will。中文「如果明天下雨」沒有時態，所以很多人會寫成 if it will rain，這是錯的。

• If it rains tomorrow, we will stay home.如果明天下雨，我們就待在家。

• I'll call you when I get to the station.我到車站的時候會打給你。

• If you study hard, you will pass the test.如果你用功，你就會考過。

常見錯誤

• ✗Because I was sick, so I didn't go to school.
  ✓Because I was sick, I didn't go to school.中文「因為……所以……」一起用，英文 because 和 so 只能留一個。
• ✗If it will rain tomorrow, we will stay home.
  ✓If it rains tomorrow, we will stay home.if 子句說未來也用現在式。
• ✗I'll call you when I will get home.
  ✓I'll call you when I get home.when 表時間的子句說未來用現在式。
• ✗I like dogs, but I like cats.
  ✓I like dogs, and I like cats.兩件事沒有相反，不能用 but；but 前後意思要相反。
