- 1Welcome to the Olympic park. Let's follow the Games from ancient Greece to a modern city.
- 2These ancient ruins are in Olympia, Greece. The ancient Olympic Games began here in 776 BC.
- 3During the ancient Games, a truce paused wars. The shields and spears were put down.
- 4The Games were held every four years for over a thousand years, then stopped. In 1896, Coubertin revived them.
- 5Today the flame is lit in Olympia using the sun's rays. Then it is carried in a torch.
- 6Thousands of runners carry the torch to the host city. They pass it on in a relay.
- 7The Games are given to a host city, not a country. That is why we say Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024.

- 12The winners get a medal: gold for first, silver for second, bronze for third.
- 13Here is a secret. A gold medal is mostly silver, with a thin gold coating.
- 14Now it's your turn. Turn the park around and click on anything you see.
Two Thousand Years, One Idea
The ancient Olympic Games began in Olympia, Greece, in 776 BC. They were held every four years for over a thousand years, then stopped.
In 1896 a Frenchman named Pierre de Coubertin brought them back. The first modern Games were held in Athens, with fourteen countries taking part.1896
Today more than two hundred teams compete, and the Games are watched by billions of people.
The four-year gap is called an Olympiad, and it is why athletes talk about training in four-year cycles.
The Symbols and What They Mean
- The five rings五環
- Five interlocking rings stand for the five inhabited continents coming together. The six colours — blue, yellow, black, green, red and the white background — were chosen because every national flag in the world contains at least one of them.
- The motto格言
- Faster, Higher, Stronger — in Latin, Citius, Altius, Fortius. In 2021 the word Together was added to the end.
- The torch relay
- A flame is lit in Olympia using the sun's rays and carried by thousands of runners to the host city, where it burns until the Games end.
- Medals
- Gold for first, silver for second, bronze for third. A gold medal is actually mostly silver with a thin gold coating.
- The host city, not the host country
- The Games are awarded to a city, which is why we say Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 rather than Japan or France.
