Games Designed on Purpose

Chess and Go grew over centuries. Modern board games are different: one person designs them, and their name is printed on the box.

Many of the best-known ones come from Germany, which is why people sometimes call the whole style German-style games.

They usually avoid two things that older games often have: players being knocked out early, and results decided mainly by dice.

The aim is that everyone stays involved until the end, and that better decisions usually win.

What Makes a Good Design

No player elimination
Being knocked out early means sitting and watching. Modern designs keep everyone playing until the final round.
Luck should shape, not decide
Some randomness makes a game exciting and lets a beginner beat an expert occasionally. Too much makes decisions meaningless.
Meaningful choices
Every turn should offer options that are genuinely different, with real trade-offs. If one option is always best, there is no game.
Catch-up without punishing the leader
Good games let a trailing player come back through smart play, rather than by a rule that simply attacks whoever is ahead.
The rules should teach themselves
A well designed game can be explained in a few minutes, and the deeper strategy is discovered while playing.
