Explaining Taiwan in English
Taiwan's night markets are one of the first things visitors want to see. But many dishes have no simple English name.
The trick is not to translate word by word. Instead, say what it is made of and what it tastes like.
For example, oyster omelette works well because it names two things the listener already knows.
Some names are now used in English as they are, like bubble tea and stinky tofu. When a food becomes famous enough, the world learns the name.
How to Describe Any Dish
- Start with the main ingredient
- Say pork, beef, oyster, tofu or noodles first. That single word already tells the listener most of what they need.
- Then the cooking method
- Fried, grilled, steamed, stewed, braised. This is the second most useful word, and it decides whether the dish sounds crispy or soft.
- Then the shape or form
- Ball, roll, cake, soup, bun, skewer. A stinky tofu is a block, a meatball is a ball, a spring roll is a roll.
- Add a taste word if you can能加就加一個味道詞
- Sweet, salty, sour, spicy, savoury. Savoury is the useful one that Chinese speakers often forget — it means tasty but not sweet.
- Warn about the strong ones
- Stinky tofu smells much stronger than it tastes. Telling someone that first is more useful than translating the name.
