The Kingdom of Fruit水果王國
Taiwan is often called the kingdom of fruit. The island is small, but it has both tropical lowlands and cool high mountains.台灣常被叫做水果王國。這座島很小，卻同時擁有熱帶的低地和涼爽的高山。
That means something is always in season. Mangoes and lychees in summer, persimmons and pears in autumn, strawberries and wax apples in winter.這代表一年到頭都有當季水果。夏天有芒果和荔枝，秋天有柿子和梨，冬天有草莓和蓮霧。
In science, a fruit is the part of a plant that holds the seeds. That is why a tomato is really a fruit.在科學上，水果是植物包著種子的那個部分。所以番茄其實是水果。
In cooking, we call something a vegetable if we use it in savoury dishes. So a tomato is a fruit to a scientist and a vegetable to a cook. Both are right.在烹飪上，用在鹹的菜餚裡就叫蔬菜。所以番茄對科學家是水果，對廚師是蔬菜。兩邊都沒錯。

- Ripe, unripe, overripe熟、生、過熟
- Unripe fruit is hard and sour. Ripe fruit is soft and sweet. Overripe fruit has gone too far and starts to spoil.沒熟的水果又硬又酸。熟的水果又軟又甜。過熟的則是熟過頭，開始壞掉。
- Peel, core, stone, seed皮、核、籽
- You peel a banana, remove the core of an apple, take the stone out of a mango, and spit out watermelon seeds. Stone is also called pit.香蕉要剝皮，蘋果要去核，芒果要去籽核，西瓜籽要吐掉。stone 也可以叫 pit。
- Fruit is usually uncountablefruit 通常不可數
- Say I ate some fruit, not two fruits. But you can count individual kinds: two apples, three bananas.說 I ate some fruit，不說 two fruits。但個別種類可以數：two apples、three bananas。

- Fruit in season is cheaper, sweeter and has travelled less. Out of season it must be imported or grown in a greenhouse.當季水果比較便宜、比較甜，也運送得比較少。非當季就得進口，或在溫室裡種。

- A wax apple is not an apple, and a pineapple has nothing to do with pines or apples. English fruit names are often descriptions, not classifications.蓮霧（wax apple）不是蘋果，鳳梨（pineapple）跟松樹和蘋果都沒關係。英文的水果名常常是描述，不是分類。
