The Smallest Ball, the Fastest Hands最小的球，最快的手
Table tennis is played on a table with a small net across the middle. Two or four players hit a very light ball back and forth with paddles.桌球在一張中間架著小球網的桌子上進行。兩位或四位球員用球拍把一顆很輕的球來回擊打。
The ball weighs only 2.7 grams, so players cannot hit it as hard as a tennis ball. Instead they use spin.球只有 2.7 公克重，所以球員沒辦法像打網球那樣用力擊球，他們靠的是旋轉。
A good player can make the ball spin more than a hundred times a second. The spin decides where the ball goes after it bounces, which is why the sport looks so confusing at first.好的球員可以讓球每秒旋轉超過一百圈。旋轉決定了球落地後往哪裡跑，這就是為什麼桌球一開始看起來讓人摸不著頭緒。

- 11 points a game一局 11 分
- The first player to 11 points wins the game, but they must lead by two. At 10–10 the game continues until someone leads by two.先拿到 11 分的一方贏得該局，但必須領先兩分。10 比 10 之後就一直打到有人領先兩分為止。
- Best of five or seven五局三勝或七局四勝
- Most matches are best of five games. Big finals are often best of seven.大部分比賽是五局三勝。重要的決賽常常是七局四勝。
- Serve changes every two points每兩分換發球
- The serve changes side every two points. After 10–10 it changes every single point.每兩分換一次發球權。到 10 比 10 之後改成每一分就換。
- The serve must bounce twice發球要落兩次
- The server must throw the ball up at least 16 centimetres, then hit it so that it bounces once on their own side and once on the other side.發球方必須把球往上拋至少 16 公分，然後擊出，讓球先在自己這一側彈一次，再彈到對面。
- Spin, not power靠旋轉，不是靠力量
- The two sides of a paddle are different colours — usually red and black — because they grip the ball differently. Players flip the paddle to change the spin, and the colours let the opponent see which side was used.球拍兩面顏色不同——通常是紅色和黑色——因為兩面咬球的方式不一樣。球員會翻拍來改變旋轉，而顏色讓對手看得出來剛才用的是哪一面。
