In most countries the game is called football. Americans call it soccer, because they already use the word football for a different sport.在大部分國家，這個運動叫 football。美國人叫它 soccer，因為 football 這個字他們拿去指另一種運動了。

The modern rules were written in England in 1863. Before that, every school and town played its own version.現代規則是 1863 年在英格蘭訂下來的。在那之前，每所學校、每個城鎮玩的規則都不一樣。

Each team has eleven players, including one goalkeeper. The goalkeeper is the only player who may use their hands, and only inside the penalty area.每隊十一人，其中一位是守門員。守門員是唯一可以用手的球員，而且只能在禁區內。
Two halves of 45 minutes上下半場各 45 分鐘
A match has two halves of 45 minutes with a 15-minute break. The referee adds extra time at the end of each half for stoppages.一場比賽分上下半場各 45 分鐘，中場休息 15 分鐘。裁判會在每半場結束時補上因中斷而損失的時間。
One goal, one point一球一分
The whole ball must cross the goal line between the posts. Scores are usually low: 1–0 and 2–1 are very common.整顆球必須完全越過兩根門柱之間的球門線。足球比數通常很低，1 比 0、2 比 1 都很常見。
Offside越位
An attacker cannot be closer to the goal than the last defender when a teammate passes to them. This stops players from waiting next to the goal.隊友傳球的瞬間，進攻球員不能比最後一名防守球員更接近球門。這條規則是為了不讓人一直站在球門旁邊等球。
Yellow and red cards黃牌與紅牌
