什麼時候用
adopt 是「採用、採納」，也可以是「領養」。受詞是別人提出的東西——一個做法、一項政策、一個孩子。跟 adapt 的差別在於 adopt 不改變那個東西，只是拿來用。
常見錯誤
- adopt 是及物動詞，後面直接接受詞，不加 to：adopt a new policy。
- adopt a child 是領養，adapt a child 不成立——這一組不能靠語感亂猜。
- 名詞是 adoption；adaption 雖然字典查得到，但 adaptation 才是 adapt 的標準名詞形。
