  14. 14Now it's your turn. Turn the city around and click on anything you see.

Moving a City

A city has a fixed amount of road. The question is not how fast a vehicle goes, but how many people one lane can move in an hour.

A lane of cars moves maybe two thousand people an hour, because most cars carry only one person. A bus lane moves several times that, and a metro line moves tens of thousands.

This is why cities build metros even though they are extremely expensive. Roads cannot be widened for ever.

Taipei's metro opened in 1996 and now carries around two million trips on a busy day.

How a Metro Keeps Moving

Frequency beats speed
If a train comes every two minutes you never check a timetable. Waiting time matters more to passengers than the top speed of the train.
Let people off first先下後上
Boarding before others get off blocks the doors and makes the stop longer. One slow stop delays every train behind it.
Stand on the right靠右站立
On escalators, standing on one side leaves the other side clear for people in a hurry. Taipei asks people to stand on the right.
No eating or drinking
Taipei's metro bans eating and drinking inside the paid area, and the rule is actually enforced with fines. It is one reason the system is so clean.
Transfer stations tie the network together
A network is worth far more than the sum of its lines, because each new line creates connections to every existing one.
