The Riverside Bike Path

  1. 1Welcome to the riverside bike path. The bicycle was invented over two hundred years ago, and it is still winning.
  2. 2Riding uses only about a quarter of the energy of walking. The bicycle is very efficient.
  3. 3Push the pedals round and round. Each pedal stroke turns the wheel.
  4. 4A low gear makes climbing easy. A high gear goes far with each stroke, but it is hard to push.
  5. 5To slow down, squeeze the brake levers gently. Use both brakes.
  6. 6The brake pads rub on the rim. The energy of movement becomes heat, and the bike slows down.
  7. 7When you slow down, your weight shifts forward. Grabbing only the front brake can throw you over the bars.
  8. 8Wearing a helmet is the best thing you can do to protect your head.
  9. 9Be visible! Lights and bright clothes help drivers see you.
  10. 10Most collisions happen because a driver did not see the rider.
  11. 11Why doesn't a moving bike fall over? The rider keeps making tiny steering moves. You steer towards the side you are falling.
  12. 12That is why it is almost impossible to balance while standing still.
  13. 13Riding around Taiwan is about 900 kilometres. Many people take on this challenge after graduating.
  14. 14Now it's your turn. Turn the bike path around and click on anything you see.

The Most Efficient Machine

If you measure the energy needed to move one kilogram one kilometre, a person on a bicycle beats every animal and every other vehicle.

Riding uses only about a quarter of the energy of walking the same distance, because the wheels keep rolling instead of your body rising and falling with every step.

A bicycle also weighs almost nothing compared with a car. A car uses most of its fuel moving the car, not the person.

That is why the bicycle, invented over two hundred years ago, is still winning.

How a Bicycle Works

Gears trade speed for force
A low gear turns the wheel slowly but makes climbing easy. A high gear turns the wheel far for each pedal stroke but is hard to push. You cannot get both.
Balance comes from steering
A moving bicycle stays up because the rider constantly makes tiny steering corrections towards whichever way it is falling. That is why it is almost impossible to balance while standing still.
Brakes turn motion into heat
Brake pads press on the rim or disc and rub. The energy of movement becomes heat, and the bike slows down.
Front brake does most of the work前煞出的力最多
When you slow down your weight shifts forward, pressing the front wheel into the ground. Use both brakes, but squeeze gently — grabbing only the front one can throw you over the bars.
Be visible
Most collisions happen because a driver did not see the rider. Lights, bright clothes and riding where drivers expect you all matter more than speed.

Energy to Travel One Kilometre
