Telescopes

  1. 1Welcome to the observatory on the mountain. Night is coming, so let's look at the sky.
  2. 2An observatory is built on a high, dry mountain, to get above as much air as possible.
  3. 3Light takes time to cross space. So everything you see through a telescope is a picture of the past.
  4. 4A telescope's main job is to gather light. A bigger telescope gathers more light.
  5. 5Magnifying comes second. A dim object stays invisible however much you magnify it.
  6. 6With more light, big telescopes can see faint things, which are often older and more distant.
  7. 7Some telescopes use a lens. The light goes through it and meets at one point.
  8. 8Almost all large telescopes use a mirror. A big lens sags under its own weight.
  9. 9Moving air makes stars twinkle. Planets usually do not twinkle.
  10. 10Moving air also blurs the picture. Space telescopes like Hubble are above the air, so they stay sharp.
  11. 11Infrared light passes through dust clouds that block the light our eyes can see.
  12. 12A light year is about 9.5 trillion kilometres. Distant light is also old light.
  13. 13The Andromeda galaxy is 2.5 million light years away. Its light left before humans existed.
  14. 14Now you are the astronomer. Turn the mountain and click on anything in the sky or on the ground.

Looking Back in Time回頭看過去

Light is fast but not instant. It takes time to cross space, so everything you see through a telescope is a picture of the past.

A light year is the distance light travels in one year — about 9.5 trillion kilometres.

If a star is a thousand light years away, its light left a thousand years ago. The star might not exist any more.

This is why bigger telescopes matter so much. They gather more light, so they can see fainter and therefore older and more distant things.

How Telescopes Work望遠鏡怎麼運作

Gathering light, not magnifying
The main job of a telescope is to collect light over a large area and bring it to a point. Magnification is secondary — a dim object stays invisible however much you enlarge it.
Lenses or mirrors
A refracting telescope uses lenses; a reflecting telescope uses mirrors. Almost all large telescopes use mirrors, because a big mirror can be supported from behind while a big lens sags under its own weight.
The atmosphere gets in the way大氣層擋路
Moving air blurs the image, which is why stars twinkle. Observatories are built on high dry mountains to get above as much air as possible.
Go above the air entirely
A space telescope has no atmosphere to look through at all. That is why Hubble and its successors produce such sharp images.
Not only visible light
Radio, infrared, ultraviolet and X-ray telescopes see what human eyes cannot. Infrared is especially useful because it passes through dust clouds that block visible light.

Did You Know?

  • Galileo did not invent the telescope, but in 1609 he pointed one at the sky and found moons orbiting Jupiter.
  • Those moons mattered because they proved not everything orbits the Earth.
  • Stars twinkle but planets usually do not, because planets are close enough to appear as small discs rather than points.
  • Radio telescopes can be linked across continents to work together as one enormous dish.
