Chess is played on a board of 64 squares. Each player starts with sixteen pieces and the rules fit on one page.西洋棋在 64 格的棋盤上進行。每人開局有十六個棋子，規則一頁寫得完。

Yet the number of possible games is greater than the number of atoms in the observable universe. Simple rules can produce endless depth.然而可能的棋局數量比可觀測宇宙裡的原子還多。簡單的規則可以產生無盡的深度。

The game came from India around 1,500 years ago, travelled through Persia and the Arab world, and reached Europe, changing along the way.這個遊戲大約 1,500 年前源自印度，經過波斯和阿拉伯世界，一路傳到歐洲，沿途不斷改變。

How the Pieces Move棋子怎麼走

Pawn兵
Moves one square forward but captures diagonally. It can move two squares on its first move, and if it reaches the far end it is promoted, usually to a queen.向前走一格，但斜著吃子。第一步可以走兩格；走到底線就升變，通常變成后。
Rook, bishop, queen車、象、后
The rook moves in straight lines, the bishop moves diagonally, and the queen does both. That is why the queen is the strongest piece.車走直線，象走斜線，后兩種都能走。這就是為什麼后是最強的棋子。
Knight馬
Moves in an L shape, and it is the only piece that can jump over others. That makes it awkward to defend against.走 L 形，而且是唯一可以跳過其他棋子的。這讓它很難防。
King王
Moves one square in any direction. The king is never actually captured — the game ends the moment he cannot escape.任意方向走一格。王其實永遠不會被吃掉——他無路可逃的那一刻，棋局就結束了。
Check, checkmate, stalemate將軍、將死、逼和
Check means the king is attacked and must be saved. Checkmate means he cannot be saved and the game is lost. Stalemate means the player has no legal move but is not in check — and that is a draw, not a loss.將軍是王被攻擊、必須解除。將死是解不掉，輸棋。逼和是沒有合法棋步可走但王沒有被將——那是和局，不是輸。
