A Game Invented in a Backyard
In the summer of 1965, three fathers on Bainbridge Island near Seattle came home to bored children and no equipment for a proper game.1965
They had an old badminton court, some table tennis paddles and a plastic ball full of holes. They lowered the net and made up rules as they went.
The game they invented is played on a small court with a light paddle and a slow ball, so beginners can rally on their first day.
That is why it has grown so rapidly. For several years running it has been the fastest-growing sport in the United States, and it is now spreading across Asia, including Taiwan.
The Rules That Make It Different
- The serve must be underhand
- The server must hit the ball below the waist with an upward swing, and it must land in the diagonal box. There is no powerful overhead serve, so the point starts fairly.
- The two-bounce rule
- The serve must bounce once, and the return must bounce once, before anyone may volley. This stops the serving team from rushing the net and ending the point immediately.
- The kitchen廚房
- A 2.13-metre zone on each side of the net is called the non-volley zone — everybody calls it the kitchen. You may walk into it, but you may not volley while standing there.
- Only the serving side scores
- A game goes to 11 points, and you must lead by two. The receiving side cannot score — winning the rally only wins back the serve.
- Three numbers, not two報三個數字,不是兩個
- In doubles the server calls three numbers before serving: their own score, the other side's score, and whether they are the first or second server. So 5–3–2 means five to three, second server.
The Numbers
| Net height at the centre 中央網高 | 0.86 m 公尺 |
| Points to win a game

Did You Know?
- Nobody fully agrees where the name came from. One story says the Pritchard family dog was called Pickles. Another says it comes from the pickle boat in rowing, the boat made up of whatever rowers were left over.
- The second story fits the game well, because pickleball itself was put together from leftover parts of other sports.
- The small court means players do not have to run far, so grandparents and grandchildren can play the same game together.
- The non-volley zone stops tall, strong players from simply standing at the net and smashing everything down. It is what keeps the game fair.
