Saturdays at the Animal Shelter
When Yu-ting turned sixteen, she started volunteering at an animal shelter near her home. Her parents agreed, as long as she kept up with her schoolwork.
Her first tasks were simple. She cleaned the cages, filled the water bowls, and washed old towels. After a few weeks, though, she began to look forward to Saturdays.
Gradually, the staff gave her more responsibility. She learned how to walk the larger dogs and how to calm cats that were frightened of people. With patience, she found that even the shyest animals would slowly learn to trust her.
The best moments came when an animal found a new home. Yu-ting says that saying goodbye is always a little sad, but it is the reason she keeps coming back.
