The Story of Bubble Tea

Bubble tea is now sold in cities from London to Los Angeles. In the 1980s, tea shops in central and southern Taiwan began adding chewy tapioca balls to cold milk tea.

At first, the drink was popular mainly among students. Soon, shops across the island were competing to offer new flavors and toppings.

In the 1990s, bubble tea shops began to open in other parts of Asia. Today, some chains have hundreds of stores around the world.

However, the drink's success has also raised health concerns. For this reason, many shops now let customers choose less sugar or less ice.
