School Uniforms: Two Views

by Pan Shu-fen · Oct 2026

Should students have to wear school uniforms? In Taiwan, most high schools have uniforms, but many have relaxed their rules in recent years. Some now let students wear their own clothes on certain days. The question of whether uniforms should stay or go still leads to lively debates. Here are two students' views.

Jessica, a tenth grader, supports uniforms. "Uniforms make mornings easier," she says. "I don't have to waste time deciding what to wear. More importantly, uniforms reduce . Not every family can afford expensive brands, and when everyone dresses the same, nobody is judged by their clothes." She also believes that uniforms give students a sense of belonging. "When I wear my school's uniform at a sports event, I feel proud. It shows that we are one team."

Ethan, an eleventh grader, disagrees. "Clothes are a way to express who we are," he argues. "High school students are learning to become independent adults, so we should be trusted to make our own choices." He points out that uniforms can be uncomfortable, especially in Taiwan's hot and summers. "Many students wear their PE clothes all day anyway, which shows that the uniform is not . Besides, students can still see who has expensive shoes or phones, so uniforms don't really remove the ."

Both sides raise fair points. Supporters fairness and school spirit, while opponents value comfort and personal . Perhaps the answer lies somewhere in between, such as a simple, comfortable uniform for formal events and more freedom on other days. What matters most is that students, parents, and teachers discuss the rules together and reach a decision that everyone can accept.
