Phones in Class: Yes or No?
by School Paper Team · Oct 2026
Should students bring phones to class? Next month, our school will vote on a new rule about phones. Two eighth graders shared their with the school paper.
Kevin, Class 805: "Yes. Phones are useful tools. In English class, I can look up new words in a few seconds. On field trips, I can take photos and videos for our reports. My parents both work late, and they must reach me in an . A phone is much faster than the office phone. Teachers can make clear rules. Phones stay on the desk, face down, and students may use them only with the teacher's OK. That is better than a total ."
Amy, Class 812: "No. Phones are the biggest problem in our classroom. Every few minutes, a phone buzzes, and twenty heads turn. Some students play games or check messages under their desks. They miss important parts of the lesson, and their grades fall. At lunch, no one talks. We all just look at our screens. For an , students can use the office phone. In my opinion, school should be a break from screens. Paper dictionaries are slower, but I remember new words better with them."
Both students make good points. Kevin cares about and learning tools. Amy cares about and real friends. Maybe the best answer is in the middle. Which side do you agree with? Write your ideas on a card and put it in the student council box by Friday.
