How Bats Hunt at Night

Bats are wonderful animals. They are the only flying in the world. Most bats sleep in caves or old trees during the day. They hang upside down and hold on with their feet. At night, they wake up and fly out for food.
But how can a bat find food in the dark? Many bats use sound. A bat makes very high sounds with its mouth or nose. People can't hear these sounds, but they are loud for the bat. The sounds hit an insect or a tree and come back to the bat's ears.
The bat listens to these returning sounds very carefully. A quick return means a close object, and a slow return means a faraway one. In this way, a bat can "see" with its ears. It can find a tiny in the air and catch it in less than a second.
Bats are also good friends to people. One small bat can eat hundreds of insects in one night, and many of those insects are bad for . Some bats eat fruit and drop the seeds in new places. Others drink from flowers and carry from one flower to the next.
In Taiwan, you can see bats near rivers and parks on summer evenings. Next time, look up at the sky around sunset. Those small dark shapes are not birds. They are busy little of the night, and they are working hard for us.
