Cram School: Yes or No?

In Taiwan, many junior high students go to cram school after class. Some of them study there until nine or ten at night. Is it a good idea? Our school newspaper asked two ninth graders for their opinions.
Kevin, 15: "I go to cram school four nights a week, and it has really helped me. My math teacher at cram school explains things in a different way, and I understand them better. I can ask questions in a small class, too. Also, all my friends go there, so I'm never bored. The big exam is coming soon, and I want to get into a good senior high school. For me, cram school gives me . Without it, I would be worried all the time."
Grace, 14: "I stopped going to cram school last year. I was always tired and , and I had no time for sports or reading. I often fell asleep in class the next day, so I learned less, not more. Now I make my own study plan. I review my notes every evening, and I ask my teachers when I don't understand something. My grades are about the same, but I feel much healthier and happier. I also have time for the school band. Studying is important, but rest is a basic need, too."
Both students make good points. Cram school can give extra help and support, but it costs money and time. Too much isn't good for anyone. Every student needs a between study and rest, and the best may be different for each person. Before you decide, ask yourself a few questions: How do I learn best? How much sleep do I get? What do I want to do with my free time? Only you know the answers, and it's your decision.
