Subject: Hello from Kyoto!

Hi Mia,

How are you? I'm writing to you from a small hotel in Kyoto, Japan. My family arrived here by plane on Monday, and we will stay until Saturday. The weather is cool, and the leaves on the trees are red and gold. It is the most beautiful season of the year here.

Kyoto is a very old city. For more than a thousand years, Japan's lived here in big . There are also more than a thousand here. Yesterday we visited one with thousands of orange gates. We walked through the gates up the side of a mountain. My legs were tired, but the view of the city from the top was wonderful.

The food here is different from the food at home. It is less sweet than Taiwanese food, and it has a light taste. My brother tried cold tofu for breakfast and made a funny face. I liked the green tea ice cream best. It was a little bitter, but very smooth.

Tomorrow we are going to visit a famous bamboo forest. There will be lots of there, and we will get up very early. After that, we will see the deer in Nara, a city near Kyoto. My dad says, "Be careful. The deer love cookies, and they are not shy!"

I bought you a at the market: a small bell on a red string. In Japan, a bell like this brings good luck. I'll give it to you at school next week. Please say hi to our class for me. I miss all of you, and I really miss our night market food!

See you soon, Hannah
