Why We Put Things Off
Almost everyone has put off an important task at some point. A student may plan to start a report on Monday but end up writing it the night before it is due. In reality, procrastination is often less about time and more about feelings.
When a task seems boring, difficult, or stressful, we naturally want to avoid the unpleasant feelings it brings. The problem is that the relief does not last. As the deadline gets closer, the stress returns—usually stronger than before.
So how can we break the cycle? One useful method is to divide a large task into smaller steps. Another is to promise yourself to work on something for just five minutes. Once you have started, it is usually much easier to keep going.
Finally, it helps to be kind to yourself. On the other hand, people who forgive themselves for putting things off often find it easier to get started the next time.
