Fixing More Than Toasters
Fixing More Than Toasters
1On the second Saturday of every month, a small community center in Tainan fills with an unusual mix of sounds: the hum of a sewing machine, the click of a screwdriver, and the laughter of neighbors who, until recently, barely knew each other. Welcome to the neighborhood's "repair café," where anything from a wobbly chair to a silent radio can get a second life.
2The idea came from Mr. Huang Chien-ming, a retired physics teacher. When his wife's old electric fan stopped working, a shop told him that fixing it would cost more than buying a new one. "That seemed wrong to me," he recalls. "The motor was fine. Only one small part was broken." He repaired it himself in twenty minutes, and he began to wonder how many useful things were being thrown away for similar reasons.
3He put up a notice at the local market, inviting anyone with broken items, and anyone with repair skills, to meet at the community center. Only six people came the first time. Now about fifty visitors show up each month, along with a team of volunteers that includes a retired tailor, an electrician, and several high school students who handle phones and computers.
4The rules are simple. Repairs are free, but owners must stay and watch, and they are encouraged to try the work themselves. "We don't want to be a free repair shop," Huang explains. "We want people to leave knowing a little more than when they came."
5For many visitors, the café offers something no shop can. Mrs. Chen, 78, brought in a rice cooker she had used for three decades. While a student volunteer replaced its switch, the two chatted about cooking, school, and the neighborhood's past. "The cooker works again," she said with a smile, "but what I really enjoyed was the conversation."
6Huang hopes the idea will spread to other communities. "Repairing things saves money and reduces waste," he says. "But it also repairs something else: the connections between people."
