Will Cars Drive Themselves?

by Eric Kuo · Oct 2026

Imagine a car with no driver. You get in and say, "School, please," and the car takes you there. You can read a book or take a nap on the way. This sounds like a movie, but some companies are already testing cars like this on real roads.

How does a car like this work? It has many on its roof and sides. They watch the road all the time, day and night. A computer inside the car looks at all the information and decides in less than a second. Should I stop? Should I turn? Should I slow down? The computer can faster than a human, and it never gets tired.

According to many people, these cars will make our roads safer. Most car start with a human error. Some drivers drive too fast, and others look at their phones. A computer will never do these things. Older people and people with poor eyesight will travel with less trouble too. They won't need a driver at all.

But there are still problems. These cars still make mistakes in heavy rain, fog, and busy city . And after an , who is : the passenger or the company? Some drivers also worry about their jobs. Taxi and truck drivers may lose their work.

So will we all ride in cars without drivers in the ? Maybe, but not tomorrow. For now, the best driver is still a careful human with both hands on the wheel and both eyes on the road.
